Last week one of Ireland’s secondary schools (high school) set out to break the world record for the largest human shamrock of all time. Shamrocks vary in sizes from about 1cm to maybe 2cm sometimes but this human shamrock was particularly large and nearly stretched 50 meters in width. It is was a brilliant stunt to raise awareness as it is so close to Saint Patrick’s Day and was a terrific Irish present to give the nation of Ireland
The Idea
The Idea started 25 years ago when the school celebrated the anniversary of the Saint Patrick’s Day badges which began in 1988. This year the school wanted to do something particularly eye catching to mark the anniversary and so they decided to set the world record for the largest human shamrock. So far it has been a massive success with nearly every national newspaper printing a story about the school
How it happened
Over the 25 years that the Blackrock school has been fundraising for the charity GOAL. In that time the school has raised over €2,000,000 in funds and both GOAL and the school wanted to work together to make the 25th anniversary something really special and they really achieved this. That’s when they came up with the idea to make the human shamrock with the 800 school pupils.
The school is still waiting to hear back from the Guinness book of world records for their final decision and we wish them all the best here at the “Auld Sod Gifts”. We look forward to seeing what they do next year to try and top this one.
